Exploring the Spiritual Themes of Avatar
By pastorbuhro on Jan 22, 2010 in Lesson Series
In December, James Cameron released his latest blockbuster, the sci-fi adventure Avatar. If ticket sales are any indication, there’s a really good chance that if you have seen a movie at the theater in the last month, you’ve seen it. It’s outselling all competition and is poised to become the #1 highest grossing movie of all time.
But just because you’ve seen it doesn’t mean you’ve taken time to think through the spiritual implications of it. And so, during the month of January we’ll be taking a closer look at the movie and considering the broader questions that it asks.
Don’t worry if you miss a Tuesday night. You can always follow along with the Water’s Edge podcast. Either check us out on iTunes, subscribe via RSS, or keep checking back here. We’ll be adding the sermons after the jump as we go along.

This sermon takes a look at the new hit movie Avatar and asks the question “Why is this story so compelling?” We examine how in many ways this story reflects the greatest story ever told, and the ways in which it comes up short.
Inspired by the scene in which Neytiri tells Jake that one day he will have to choose his own banshee, and the banshee must choose him, this lesson looks at the fear of rejection and how it can paralyze us from action. However, Ephesians chapter 1 tells us that with God, we need not fear rejection. Before we ever choose Him, He chose us!
Throughout the movie, Jake struggles with his grasp on reality. As long as he is living one life in the human compound and another in the jungle, he struggles with competing loyalties and the disconnect of trying to live a double life. In a digital age, many people struggle with the same things. How can a Christian live a life of integrity in digital publics? We believe 2 Corinthians chapter one holds the key.
